Adelaide is the capital of South Australia and home to over 1.2 million. Take a look over this city, a lot has changed since Governor Hindmarsh proclaimed this a state under the old gum tree in 1836!

Trees have followed the houses as Adelaide has spread north, south and east. It may surprise you to know that, despite this forest of tree tops, Adelaide ranks 5th out of all Australian capitals for the amount of green space in its area.

So what is Green space? Basically it is an area that combines trees, plants and benefits. Your home garden is a green space, as is your local park, playground and community garden.

Plants and trees make us happier, healthier, and more productive. Plus clean the air, cool the city and reduce stress, so anything we can do to increase the amount of green space, including the number of trees, is a very good thing!

202020 is an important national initiative working with governments, local councils, developers, schools and home gardeners to create 20% more green space in our urban areas by 2020.

It’s always said that the best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago, the next best time is today. Increasing the number of trees and plants and expanding our green spaces will go a long way in keeping cities like Adelaide happier, healthier and cooler into the future!
