Good soil equals good gardens, sounds pretty simple I know but it makes perfect sense. Healthy soils grow healthy plants. Adding the right ingredients is what successful growing is all about.

Compost is all part of the big ‘organic’ picture that helps improves soil health and its ability to hold water and nutrients. It’s important to work this into the ground so vital soil microbes can begin feeding and multiplying. Whilst you’ve got the good smells going, time to add another top organic ingredient.

You’d all be familiar with Yates Dynamic Lifter. You’ll find it at all hardware stores and garden centres. This stuff has so many uses from soil preparation to fertilising fruit trees, vegies and lawns, I reckon every garden needs a bag.

This is totally organic. The important point about Dynamic Lifter, is it has a chicken manure base, and we all know how power packed chock poo is. Compared to other animal manures, chicken comes out on top for nutrient value. Of course it needs to be well aged before you can apply to plants which is not a problem here. On top of the chicken manure, other natural ingredients have been added – Blood and Bone, fishmeal and seaweed which all go through a special composting process and are pelletized, like this, to make it easy to apply.

Another top thing you might not know about Dynamic Lifter, is it’s a top slow release fertilizer. The pellets don’t dissolve instantly, rather they hold and gradually release their nutrients.

The benefits of applying organics such as Dynamic Lifter are many. Firstly, they help with soil structure. What good soil needs is the ability to create clods or peds. Organic matter helps ‘glue’ lots of particles together to make these peds, which allows water and air and plant roots to easily penetrate.

Once soil has good structure, the organic matter then helps to hold moisture and nutrients around plant roots. With the ground nice and rich, billions of soil microbes and loads of earthworms can get to work to turn the organic matter into plant ready food that is a constant source of nutrients for plants.

Simple answer to a soil problem? Solution – add your organics. Once you get your soil right, your plants will be right. Time to get some in here and autumn is a brilliant season to be gardening.
