WHAT TO DO IN THE MAY GARDEN
• Citrus trees should be sprayed for scale.
• Strawberries can be planted making sure the beds are adequately drained and mulched.
• Spread gypsum over the garden and lawn to aid drainage, especially in clay soils.
• Maintain the mulching programme to retain soil warmth.
• Dahlias can be lifted — but only after their foliage has yellowed and died.
• Watch for out for hungry snails on the move, be careful when applying bait, scatter lightly and never leave in a pile.
• Mummified fruit should be removed from trees to avoid infection from brown rot spores.
• Fertilise winter flowering seedlings and vegetable plants.
• Pome and stone fruits should be sprayed with copper-oxychloride at leaf fall.
• Add a rainwater diverter to your downpipe to give the garden some extra water.
