Thinking about growing a fruit tree but not sure what to buy? Well South Australia’s premier fruit tree producer Sam Luke at Balhannah Nurseries is the best person to give us some advice!

Growing over 250,000 trees every year, Balhannah Nurseries know their trees.

So, What should you be looking at when choosing a fruit tree? What you like to eat, what area you have and how much sun or shade the spot gets are all important factors.

Some of Sam Luke’s top SA performing fruit trees include Satsuma Plum, Anzac Peach, O’Henry Peach (Sam’s favourite) and Goldmine Nectarine!

Planting Tips:
• Look for good caliper, good height, branching (but be aware that some varieties don’t branch much in their first year or so)
• Do not add the sawdust from the bag into the hole
• Dig as big a hole as possible – at least 2x root ball
• Mix good top soil in
• Add organics – only one chance to change the soil – after planting it’s all from the top only
• Makes sure fertiliser not concentrated on roots or trunk
• Keep bud union above the soil level
• Splay the roots
• Remove damaged roots
• Only need to prune a bare-rooted tree (because potted tree roots are intact)

Get the right tree, the right advice and the right planting and everything should be right!
