Compost is a brilliant soil improver and making your own is easy, all you need is a compost bin. STEP ONE Find a spot away from your entertaining area which has at least a metre of clear space STEP TWO Drop into your local Mitre 10 and pick up 4 permapine posts, a number of 1m long permapine slats and some long wood screws. STEP THREE Set out 2 timber posts apart and starting from the top attach timbers slats using the wood screws. Always keep a gap of about 60-80mm between the slats and allow around 400 mm of free post at the base. STEP FOUR Now do the same with the other 2 posts. STEP FIVE Using the remaining slats, again remembering to keep 60-80mm between them, connect the 2 sides you’ve built to form a 1m x 1m x 1m box STEP SIX Stand the structure up keeping the slats at the top and place in the location you have chosen for the compost bin. STEP SEVEN Mark out the position of the 4 posts and roughly level the ground before digging the holes. STEP EIGHT Using the posthole digger dig the 4 the holes at 400mm deep setting the dirt aside. STEP NINE Place the timber structure post first into the holes allowing the bottom slat to touch the ground. Using the spirit level check that the structure is level and make any required adjustments by either adding or removing dirt. STEP TEN Once the level is correct use the dirt from the holes to back fill around the posts in the ground and compact this dirt using a timber off cut and a hammer.
